About 85% of US Fortune 500 companies use barter, and some estimates indicate that Barter transactions make up as much 40% of the world's economy. You might ask, “If barter is such a great system for growing your business, then why wasn’t it more popular before barter exchanges came onto the scene?” One of the great limitations to the growth of the barter industry was that cash was simply easier to use than barter, and most people used cash to conduct business. Thus, in a weak economy where cash was in short supply, the use of barter naturally expanded. When the economy became strong again, the use of cash increased and the use of barter decreased. This is all changing. In the last decade, the use of credit as a typical way of doing business has expanded dramatically. Most credit is similar. If you are eligible for it, you get it, use it, and pay it back with interest. In this sense, there is little difference between a credit line from a bank and one from a barter exchange. The one difference is that it is easier to get a credit line from a barter exchange than from a bank, even if you have a poor credit rating, especially if you have something of value to offer. Also, Trump’s tariffs have driven more businesses to seek out barter opportunities.

Three recent changes in how business is conducted seem to point toward a rapid expansion in the use of barter:

• The continual reduction of the psychological association with cash as the primary way of conducting transactions

• Technology and the internet are making it easier to conduct business through barter

• The enormous expansion of credit.

As these factors become increasingly the norm, doing business with barter/RT will make greater sense to the ordinary businessperson.

Though the use of barter/RT is expanding for ordinary business, many traditionally trained economists have been slower in understanding its full potential. Many books on macroeconomics state (incorrectly) that a barter system may only be able to function effectively in a simple economy in which a limited variety of goods are produced, but cannot function effectively in a complex economy that produces an extensive collection of goods and services.

This is nonsense - especially when you consider the influence of technology (cell phones, fax machines, the internet) in connecting people, making complex systems accessible, and simplifying record keeping.

You have plenty to barter, even if you have never considered it before!

Wealth is not a “thing”. It is a way of being.

Karen says: “Many pundits talk about the economy and provide solutions but it is not that simple. When faced with a complicated problem, I have to expand my thinking. When I say complicated, I usually mean that we have so many preconceived ideas on the subject that it's difficult to see the situation clearly and understand what's not working. So I believe that many situations that we think are complicated usually result from misinformation, and therefore a lack of understanding of the situation at hand, and therefore the inability to arrive at any viable solutions.

This usually results from the brainwashing that you and I have been discussing over the years, which is disseminated from most of the media that most of the people who receive their information from. Because this has been going on for so long, beginning in the home, continuing in the school system, and reinforced by so much of the media, and from all the "cliches". I have given a general term for that which reinforces the inability to think and summarize the situation into a sound bite that can easily be ingested and zombied over by the masses. For example, the term “too big to fail”, explained a very complicated problem with the banks that few people could actually understand. In the end this idea put as much fear as possible into people's minds, telling them the entire banking system would collapse if the bankers were not bailed out.

Now I'm not necessarily saying we had an alternative, what I'm saying is we need to understand the problem that caused the situation and institute measures to prevent it in the future, or to mitigate it, if preventive measures weren't feasible. As a case in point the banks that were too big to fail, are now bigger than ever. So my dear friend Lewis, what's wrong with this picture? When you see what doesn't work, the journey begins to ascertain what does. In my experience when I'm so baffled by the situation, and think things are so complicated, that it's too difficult to understand, the first thing I do is investigate the situation and find out what solutions can be implemented to replace what I found out to be faulty. This usually leads to an investigation from people who can think outside the box, not from the people who caused the problem, which is usually the way crisis are handled, as it was in the banking crisis. If you understand what has happened over the years economically, eliminate the clichés from your mind, and engage in discussions with open-minded people who have spent time thinking and studying the crisis, the answers will emerge.
