Many years ago, I was experienced harsh headaches combined with depression. Some health food stor owner recommended I explore getting full spectrum lighting. I did and it changed my life. I became much happier and the headaches disappeared.
This, then is a story about how I healing through Full Spectrum Lighting.
Full-spectrum light is light that covers the electromagnetic spectrum from near-ultraviolet to infrared. This includes all light wavelengths that are useful to plant or animal life. In particular, sunlight is considered full spectrum, even though the solar spectral distribution reaching Earth will change with latitude, time of day, and atmospheric conditions.
“Full-spectrum” is not a technical term when applied to an electrical light bulb. Rather, it implies that the product emulates some important quality of natural light.
Products marketed as “full-spectrum” may produce light throughout the entire visible spectrum, but without producing an even spectral distribution. Some may not differ substantially from lights not marketed as “full-spectrum”.
Still, any plant light or full spectrum oriented light can have a major impact on brain functioning, especially for those suffering from some chemical-based brain abnormality, and those with an esoteric sensitivity generally associated with empaths.
Measurement The Light Spectrum
Color temperature and Color Rendering Index (CRI) are the standards for measuring light. There is no technical definition of “full-spectrum” so there is no way to accurately measure it. To compare “full-spectrum” sources requires direct comparison of spectral distribution, with precise metrics.
Any light source’s emission spectrum of will vary depending on the light producing mechanism.
Thermal sources such as incandescent bulbs produce electromagnetic radiation over a continuous and broad range of wavelengths, including ultraviolet and infrared.
I have often found that my clients and students that relied on fluorescent lighting often had more erratic behavior and emotional challenges. Especially those who spoke of have lucid dreams and astral projection experience. Research has shown that fluorescent lights have a different emission spectrum shape than do thermal and incandescent sources.
Some wavelengths will be produced with greater amplitude than others. Fluorescent sources used for lighting, such as white light emitting diodes, fluorescent lamps, and metal halide lamps are intended to produce light at all wavelengths. Even here the distribution is different from thermal sources and so colors will appear different under these forms of lighting than under daylight. As for the visual component, some colors may match under one light source but won’t appear the same under another. This is a phenomenon called metamerism.
Metamerism
In colorimetry, metamerism is a perceived matching of colors with different (nonmatching) spectral power distributions. Colors that match in this manner are called metamers.
A spectral power distribution describes the proportion of total light given off (transmitted, emitted, or reflected) by a color sample at each visible wavelength.
It defines the complete information about the light coming from the sample. Since the human eye contains only three color receptors (three types of cone cells), this means that all colors are reduced to three basic sensory quantities. These are known as the tristimulus values. Metamerism occurs because each type of cone responds to the cumulative energy from a broad range of wavelengths, so that different combinations of light across all these different wavelengths can produce an equivalent receptor response and the same tristimulus values (color sensation) . In color science, the set of sensory spectral sensitivity curves is numerically represented by “color matching functions”.
All life on our planet has adapted to and is nourished by light from the sun and sky, a critical balance of visible color and invisible ultraviolet wavelengths. Over the ages, virtually every living thing developed with the help of nature’s full spectrum.
What Is Sunlight Starvation.
Today, many people suffer from sunlight starvation. As winter approaches and there is less daylight, some people experience a form of sadness, unhappiness, and negative self talk that may disappear during the spring and summer months.
This emotional state is most common in temperate climates where people spend so much time indoors that they are unable to get their daily requirements for sunlight! People need the full spectrum of light that comes with sunshine. It’s vital to life and health. Deprivation of sunlight is not just a winter phenomenon. It can be caused by many factors, including some ordinary behaviors.
One way to avoid sunlight starvation is through full spectrum indoor lighting. This type of light simulates the full color and beneficial ultraviolet spectrum of sunlight. The full visible and ultraviolet spectrum of natural white light promotes healing benefits as no artificial light can. Look for full-spectrum light bulbs at your local health food store, hardware store or light fixtures store.
The use of full spectrum lighting indoors has been shown to be very beneficial in helping people to “rewire” their brains. Some individuals require full spectrum light of an intensity that is greater than can be provided by a light bulb. These individuals use a high intensity “light box” to get the amount of light they require to be healthy. Perhaps this is due to the fact that light therapy stimulates the production of Vitamin D-3, the same type of vitamin D produced by action of sunlight on skin.
Full spectrum lighting stimulates the production of Vitamin D-3. It is important to make note of the fact that Vitamin D-3 is required for proper utilization of magnesium. Magnesium deficiency is a factor in various conditions that cause or contribute to depression. In fact, it is now known that aging is a risk factor for magnesium deficiency. And magnesium deficiency is a major cause of sadness, unhappiness, and erratic sleep
Although the cause of these issues has not clinically proven, many treatments seem to have a positive effect on chronic negativity including; including amino acids, vitamins, light therapy, negative ions, color therapy, and magnesium supplementation.
Note: 400 mg of magnesium as magnesium glycinate taken in the morning and at night may result in a faster recovery from these symptoms. A clinical trial found that 400 to 800 international units (IU) daily resulted in elimination of SAD within 5 days. I am not a doctor of course and cannot prescribe.
Michael Terman, Ph.D., director of the winter depression program at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City states, “Using bright-light therapy to shift the internal circadian clock is the most effective intervention we know about. But proper timing is critical.” (Psychology Today, Nov./Dec 2002) Dr. Terman has demonstrated that the best time to use bright-light therapy is approximately 2.5 to 4 hours past the midpoint of sleep. By timing the light in this manner, the anti-depressant response can be doubled as compared to the effect of using light therapy at any other time of the day.
Caution: Though some people have used melatonin supplements to help with irregular sleep that may be associated with depression, this is contraindicated for those suffering from SAD. For these individuals, melatonin has been found to aggravate their symptoms.
