A 3 - Minute Read
A Poem on Power and Influence
When I Google “influence Meaning”,
Many words come streaming,
For there are other words for influence,
Such as power to control congruence,
To influence positively,
Can be soft or provocatively,
Of course there is influence peddling,
And various forms of unethical meddling,
For those easily influenced its true,
This not much a clear thinker can do,
Bias may win out every time,
when dealing with one who is behind.
So though you may mean no harm,
There are times you must twist an arm,
Does the end justify the means?
Sometimes you’re stuck in between.
So keep your aim true,
And due what you need to do,
You will never need to cower.
If you master the art of power.
I have always had an interest in the concept of power and wealth. As a writer, speaker, consultant, and philanthropist I have found myself in many situations where the person I was sharing time with, had direct access to Prime Ministers, Presidents, and others of power, influence ad great wealth.
I do not say this out of ego, a need for self-aggrandizement, or to impress anyone. My own interest in power and influence is to see how it can be used as a tool for expanding charitable causes and for making the world a better place.
In this newsletter and others that will follow, I will explore what power and influence is? How they are different? How one can obtain either or both qualities? And how to have them grow in the most positive of ways.
I guess the best place to begin is with definitions. Many articles, books, and even some dictionaries will tell you that the meaning of power and influence are the same, but they are not. Influence, for instance, is a general term used to describe any event or process where one entity (be it a person, corporation, government, religion, media organization, etc.) can change either directly or indirectly another entity’s thoughts, feelings, or behaviors.
Power, on the other hand, is the place where change is precipitated. With human beings, this change will generally take place concerning a belief, an attitude, the possession of physical wealth, and/or the use of influence in its various forms.
Many theories, techniques, and tips can be used to create influence. Most of these affect us through our ways of thinking and emotions. In fact, there is a deep link between how we think and how we feel. Narrow and lazy thinkers often assume that power, influence, and even significance can be measured by size, location, or associations in space and time, this, however, is a deeply flawed point of view. Influence skills are much more subtle than these factors.
Mark Salem, a noted entertainer, and mentalist stated in a 60 Minutes interview with Mike Wallace, “For every thought, there is a physical reaction.” Salem and many other noted mentalists have the uncanny ability to sense what a person will say or do. This is real power! In addition, and at times these individuals can even influence what others will say or do by reading hundreds of small signs, being read exhibited. These signs are known as “cues.” In a stage show, Salem and his peers can perform what I like to call “slight of mind tricks.” It is as if they can read the future or know what a person is thinking. What we are actually doing is watching a Master of Influence at work. Like the Don Juan pick-up artist who can capture the heart of a woman by saying or doing a certain thing in a certain way, or a powerful Evangelist, like Billy Graham, who can get a church group jumping with a brilliant sermon, these stage entertainers have an understanding of why influence plays an important role for all of us in society, no matter who we are.
Here is a video of Marc Salem doing what he does so well, on 60 minutes.
When you can deliberately change, either directly or indirectly, another person’s or group’s thoughts, feelings, beliefs, attitudes, or behaviors and do so with virtually no effort, you have real influence.
Final Thoughts
So, though subtle, there is a difference between influence and power. Though power is a commodity for use, its foundation is influence. It is influence that will get you what you need with little energy, or effort even in situations where pure power or wealth falls short.
Much power and influence are expressed through subtle means. Concerning the ethics of subliminally influencing others, I must state this fact, though it may be uncomfortable for you, the reader to hear it. As we interact with other people, places and things we are always, like it or not, being influenced and are also influencing others. This is a given. The question is; how is this influence being transmitted, how aware are we that it is taking place, and is this influence producing positive or negative results.
.….and remember, life is not a dress rehearsal!
