· There are a number of ways that games and puzzles have changed since the 1970s. Three of the most important changes were the invention of Rubik’s Cube, the introduction of GIUs (Graphic User Interfaces) and the introduction of video games.
· Rubik’s Cube was invented in 1974 by Hungarian sculptor and professor of architecture Ernő Rubik. Though it was not specifically invented for children it can be played by children or adults. In a classic Rubik's Cube, each of the six faces is covered by nine stickers, each of one of six solid colors: white, red, blue, orange, green, and yellow. An internal pivot mechanism enables each face to turn independently, thus mixing up the colors.
· For the puzzle to be solved, each face must be returned to have only one color. The puzzle was so easy to understand that a seven year old was capable of taking on the challenge and so difficult that many mathematicians were stumped. It was the perfect puzzle for a young person with strong inductive and deductive reasoning skills.
· Like many complex problems it was all about algorithms (mathematical problem-solving formulas). In Rubik's Cubers' parlance, this was a memorized sequence of moves that has a desired effect on the cube. This terminology was derived from the mathematical use of algorithm, meaning a list of well-defined instructions for performing a task from a given initial state, through well-defined successive states, to a desired end-state.
· Each method of solving the Rubik's Cube employs its own set of algorithms, together with descriptions of what effect the algorithm has, and when it can be used to bring the cube closer to being solved.
· Not only had the he cube captivated the attention of children all over the world but it integrated the skills a young person developed playing simple games and puzzles and applying these to solving a very simple to understand and difficult to solve puzzle.

“Lewis, your program was one of the first steps I took in the process of defining my interest in alternative medicine and for that I thank you. It has been over 45 years and I am continually amazed when I look back upon how easily and quickly one step has led to the next. Thank you for being there to assist in laying the foundations for all my future studies.”
