Things are starting to get real.
For a while, I had the freedom to think about a holistic approach to dealing with my cancer diagnosis, as well as a mainstream medical approach.
This freedom has slowly disappeared since the doctors have made it clear that if I go holistic which I’m welcome to do, I might get kicked out of the chemotherapy program. That all revolves around liver enzymes. When chemotherapy is working liver enzymes go down. However, when using a holistic medicine approach, even when it’s working, sometimes liver enzymes go up. So when a doctor is doing chemo at the same time that I’m doing holistic approaches they really can’t tell whether the chemo is working or not.
We’ve been trying to get a hold of a drug called Keytruda. It’s very expensive ($32,000 per treatment).
Very often Keytruda is not covered by insurance. Our dear friend Deedee (One of the stars of the great 1970s cult film “The Warriors” did a lot of research on our behalf and found out there may be a program that we can go into where we can be part of a study. Deedee called the company (Merck) and they called us up on Friday. We will call them on Monday to see if there’s some way we can get into this program.
I also had a humbling wake-up call though it doesn’t bother me much, and I’m not embarrassed to share it with you.
Every time I fart, my underwear gets a brown strain.
I spent my whole life farting. I like when my friends fart and laughing about who cut the cheese?
But when you fart, your underwear is not supposed to get brown
My wife, sweet Lilia, and I quarreled about this. She insisted that she needed to get me special diapers to wear. The ones that are designed for brown farts. I made it clear I wasn’t going to do it.
Talk about going downhill with Cancer.
My resistance lasted about an hour and I folded. She takes such good care of me. Now I’m wearing special diapers for adults. I’ve been watching those Depends commercials for years.
I didn’t think I’d be one of those people but here I am.
My wife is a saint she never complains. She wheels me around in the wheelchair. We go out for breakfast in the morning, she washes the laundry — that includes the stains from my brown farts.
Sometimes Lilia and I talk about our life together. In case I don’t survive this, we had a great life We traveled the world, saw so many things, loved each other. We had and have great friends. You couldn’t have much of a better life than the life that we’ve had together.
I’m not looking forward to dying, but what a great life!
Lilia always reminds me to be in the world but not of the world.
Good advice.
On the bright side, I love the fact that I know so many people who are cancer survivors, and who have friends, husbands, or cousins who are cancer survivors.
Well, we’ll have to see what happens, won’t we?
