The Mind
In recent years the view of human behavior has been modified as developing technologies reveal the brainโs workings in increasing detail. The mind is a complex thing. Psychoneuroimmunologists now tell us that, scientifically, body and brain are one and the same, with the function or dysfunction in one instantly affecting the other.
Psychologists know that the mind ascends quickly to what it believes to be the truth. It grabs at any declaration, proposition, or alleged fact, it creates evidence to support its beliefs even if there is no personal knowledge to support this belief. In addition, many of its beliefs are based on unresolved memories that may or may not be available to the conscious mind.
Psycho-neuro immunology research has produced evidence that our thought patterns specifically and instantaneously affect our body chemistry and can even suppress our immune system. Every day, scientists are surprised at the workings of the human mind. What seemed mysterious one day is obvious the next, and then some new piece of information arises to make it all mysterious again. For instance, various studies conducted in recent years indicate that, in the short term, at least, placebos can be as effective as antidepressants.
At one point in time, a person may sincerely believe he knows something about something, and realize later that he was completely inaccurate. Likewise, another person may have great knowledge about something and not even be aware that they possess such knowledge.
The subconscious mind can contradict the laws of logic in a way that the conscious mind cannot. The laws of logic, no matter how objective they attempt to be, are still about the subjective, for thought is subjective and logic comes from thought. In the mind, everything is theoretical, and reality is simply a special case of the theoretical. Our common reality makes perfect intellectual sense if not looked at too closely, but in time we soon learn that it is impossible to live in any intellectual concept of reality when there are so many contradictions arising.
Connecting to the subconscious mind does not come through intellectual understanding. It is only by detaching from the illusion created through the conscious senses that one can create a new reality in the mind. This realization does not come about through wishing it so. It comes from applying the natural qualities of the mind in a new direction.
Stop whatever you are doing for just a few minutes. Now watch the inner workings of your mind. Do you see how it keeps switching from one thought to another? It is almost impossible to focus the mind. Itโs as if it is incapable of stopping at any one idea. Instead, it wanders from this to that, and from that to others. The mind is like a television screen with thousands of images coming and going. At the same time that you are watching the television screen, there are millions of other images on the other channels.
You see, we stay with one channel for a while, get bored, and switch to the next channel. I call this โMental Channel Surfingโ. Rather than being strange or unusual, this is the ordinary state of our mind. Many educators complain that people have even shorter attention spans now than ten or even fifteen years ago. So this is the ongoing state of the mind. Our individual personality bounces from one sense to another, one thought to another, like a butterfly going from one leaf to another.

โLewis, your program was one of the first steps I took in the process of defining my interest in alternative medicine and for that I thank you. It has been over 45 years and I am continually amazed when I look back upon how easily and quickly one step has led to the next. Thank you for being there to assist in laying the foundations for all my future studies.โ
