How I Discovered the Best New Hacks to The Great Writer's Life
For the Love of Writing - Thoughts, introspection, contemplation, and mental doodles
My name is Lewis Harrison I am both a full-time practical philosopher, a full-time teacher, and a full-time writer. To guess how I pull that off, would be a full-time project. The thing is, that I have “pulled it off.”
Here are a few thoughts about all that and about my writer’s life…Thanks for reading it…
I have found over the years that the one thing I have done to become a better writer is to read other great writers. I don’t even need to enjoy how they write or spin a tale. For instance, I am not a big fan of Stephen King, yet I was told by an editor I respect, that, “King is a master of dialogue.” Because of this, I keep a few of Stephen King’s books around the house, and will often take two or three minutes to read and explore the structure of how he writes dialogue. It has really influenced my writing in positive ways.
People often ask me, “How are you able to write all the time? Don’t you need to make a living doing something?”Let me simply say that I’ve arranged my life in such a way so that I can afford to do what I need to do to survive and prosper, and spend the rest of my day writing, which is my true passion. I do some meditation, yoga, Tai chi, follow the news, kiss and hug my wonderful wife, watch a documentary in the afternoon, post on my favorite Facebook Groups and Forums, watch a movie in the evening, etc. In the middle of all this, I talk to friends on the phone or Zoom, eat, handle general biological functions as required, and write.
Today, I began researching new ways to get more subscribers at AskLewis.Substack.com, where I publish my long-form pieces regularly (Please subscribe at AskLewis.Substack.com). In the process of doing this, I began to jot down short paragraphs about my life as a writer. I thought it would be fun to share some of these with you which is what this newsletter is about. Gotta start somewhere!
After an hour or two of exploring how to expand subscribers to my Substack.com newsletter, I came to the conclusion that I would never discover that secret because it doesn’t really exist. Of course, there are techniques, tools, strategies, SEO tactics, and such to draw people’s attention to my work. Still, the fact is that I have a passion for ideas, and I gain great joy from writing them down and sharing them with other’s who have a similar passion.
Most of what I write focuses on self-improvement, personal development, human potential, applied game theory, spirituality, my work as a results-oriented coach, and various courses I have created to help people live happier more meaningful lives.
Sadly I see people struggle unnecessarily. These are folks who know what I do, know I can help them but do something else less effective. I need to surrender my need to save everyone.
At the beginning of my newsletters, I usually post two paragraphs at the beginning.
The first paragraph is “This newsletter serves a demographic of highly intelligent readers, and deep thinkers with a passion for ideas, critical thinking, and a desire to understand the world around them. Readers of my posts are usually tired of being patronized elsewhere by fact-less, opinionated know-nothings, misinformation, conspiracy theories, and fake news. “Knowledge is power, wisdom brings meaning, contentment, and happiness!
The second paragraph is “On a personal note: Please excuse grammatical errors, typos, repetition, and any general nonsense, and such in this post. I am getting a bit older now, and I have about 20,000 pages of information that must get published before I leave the mortal coil. I simply write and publish more than my humble editors are able to correct. If you find enough errors you are welcome to contact me about being an editor of my work.”
Writing these two paragraphs helps me feel that I am connecting to my readers a bit more, and reduces the stress I am likely to feel because I often miss-spell and make grammatical errors though I do proofread and seek to catch them all. At this, I am a failure.
