On a personal note: Please excuse grammatical errors, typos, repetition, and any general nonsense, and such in this post. I am getting a bit older now, and I have about 20,000 pages of information that must get published before I leave the mortal coil. I simply write and publish more than my humble editors are able to correct. If you find enough errors you are welcome to contact me about being an editor of my work.

A 2 - Minute Read
I have developed a high level of influence by getting access to powerful people. I have been doing this for many years.
There are two best ways to develop Influence…
1. Information networking
2. Email pitches
My main networking tool has always been obtaining tickets to fundraiser parties and dinners, and then “working the room.” My main skill here is information. I spend 30 minutes a day, exploring information-rich newsfeeds and exploring quality think tanks across the political spectrum. My main place of exploration includes the Cato Institute, The Brooking Institute, The Hoover Institute, and Politifact.com.Then I take the information that I gather here and use it in conversations at the fundraising events. I often end up knowing more than experts on some subjects. For instance, I once had a conversation with an architect who had never heard of Christopher Alexander or his ideas on pattern language – key aspects of modern architecture theory.
I recently had a conversation with a billionaire philanthropist I had met at a fundraiser for a girl’s computer training school in Kenya. I asked him “So, how does a creative and innovative thinker bring their idea in front of someone like you, or other philanthropists or venture capitalists?”
I was surprised by his answer. “Email is the key,” he replied. “In an hour or less, and with some patience, you can find most addresses online.” I learned from him that many “power players and influencers” spend hours a day glancing through emails and responding to those that catch their attention. The key here is to not waste a second of their time. You get four or five sentences to get their attention. Get right to the point about what you need or what you have to offer. Most of all avoid making exaggerated claims. If your idea is viable and your email is one of the 10% they read in-depth, your business or idea could make its way into their world. This is how my clients got connected to the film-maker Michael Moore and a politician who was part of the World Economic Forum in Davos.
If you waste a second of an influencer’s time your email is likely to end up in their email trash can and their auto-delete filter. Remember, you have one paragraph to get their attention.
Get right to the point!
