The Best Little Known Ways to BUSINESS Success
Simple strategies for connecting to those who can take you to the next level in your business
“These newsletters serve a demographic of highly intelligent readers, with a passion for ideas, critical thinking, and unknown possibilities. Readers of my posts are usually really tired of being patronized elsewhere by fact-less, opinionated know-nothings, who complain about everything they don’t like, but lack a willingness to think about, find resources, or create life hacks, shortcuts, and solutions to fix what they don’t like.”

On a personal note: Please excuse grammatical errors, typos, repetition, and any general nonsense, and such in this post. I am getting a bit older now, and I have about 20,000 pages of information that must get published before I leave the mortal coil. I simply write and publish more than my humble editors are able to correct. If you find enough errors you are welcome to contact me about being an editor of my work.

Q. Lewis, I am an entrepreneur and sort of a loner. I realize I have suffered for it. I want to connect to others or some business network international, but don’t even know where to begin. I read one of your AskLewis.Substack.com articles on BNI networking, and social intelligence and you said that networking is the solution to this challenge. What are your thoughts on this and social network marketing in general?
A. You are correct on the importance of networking to get out of your shell. Networking can mean many things to different people. For me, especially in my own process of working with business networking groups, it is the sharing of information or services between people, businesses, or groups.
It is also a way for individuals to grow their relationships whether for their job or business. As a result, connections or a network is built that can be useful in an individual’s professional and personal life. Business networking, social networking, either person to person or online, networking groups, and professional associations are different ways that you can meet new acquaintances which can lead to meaningful relationships that can benefit both parties by the exchange of information and resources.
In the second half of the twentieth century, the concept of networking was promoted to help business people to build their social capital. In the US, workplace equity advocates encouraged business networking by members of marginalized groups (e.g., women, African-Americans, etc.) to identify and address the challenges barring them from professional success. Mainstream business literature subsequently adopted the terms and concepts, promoted them as pathways to success for all career climbers. This approach to business is now just as important for building social capital
Where to Begin
There are many ways to network, whether it be the traditional way of making connections, through a group or club. All of them serve the same purpose of trying to make close and valuable connections that allow for an equal exchange of knowledge or advice.
There are generally two types of networks;
1. Business,
2. Social.
For this article let’s focus on business networks.
Business Networks
A business network is a type of business social network which is developed to help business people connect with other managers and entrepreneurs to further each other's business interests by forming mutually beneficial business relationships. Business networking is a way of leveraging your business and personal connections to help you bring in new customers, vendors or just get great advice for running your business. There are several prominent business networking organizations that create models of networking events that, when followed, allow the business person to build new business relationships and generate business opportunities at the same time. A professional network service is an implementation of information technology in support of business networking. Chambers of Commerce and other business-oriented groups may also organize networking activities. There are multiple different types of networking groups though and the best type for each individual varies depending on the business they are in and prospects they want to meet.
Networking works in the favor of small businesses as the owners have to dabble with a variety of job functions in a small setup. When they meet up with like-minded people, they learn from their experiences and get guidance on important matters. They can even find partners and angel investors through a networking group of experienced business owners. A plethora of networking events take place in every country where entrepreneurs can meet, expand their affiliations, educate themselves and feel empowered.
A good place to begin networking is by joining Facebook, or Linkedin groups or other forums online that are related to your personal interest or business. Here you can share your knowledge and and contribute ideas. If you really connect to someone you can always direct message them and introduce yourself.
The Takeaway
Adopting smart tactics can go a long way in securing partnerships, friendships, and acquaintances. Collaboration is also a huge part of networking. According to Sorenson, Ritch L., et al. it can create stronger relationships, better conflict management and build better connections. Networking works best when supported by good conflict resolution and collaboration when trying to solve a problem.
