On a personal note: Please excuse grammatical errors, typos, repetition, and any general nonsense, and such in this post. I am getting a bit older now, and I have about 20,000 pages of information that must get published before I leave the mortal coil. I simply write and publish more than my humble editors are able to correct. If you find enough errors you are welcome to contact me about being an editor of my work.

A 2 - Minute Read
There are so many different types of preppers (people who intentionally prepare themselves for emergencies of all forms).
In addition to the different levels of prepper skills there are also unique preppers. For instance, if you are a Canadian prepper, you can go from being a city prepper to off grid doomsday prepper in an hour or more. Two terms you will often hear these folks use are; survival prepping and SHTF prepping. Both of these are concerned with having a sensible response to catastrophes of all types. These folks set prepper pantries for food security and will put some regular time on a favorite prepper website. They also join many groups and forums that explore prepper for beginners. I have my own such group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/455029215769173
There are lifehackers, those interested in simple living, off grid survivalists, and even wildcrafters. I use the anagram PLSS meaning the “prepper/lifehacking/simple living/ survivalist life style”, to describe them all.
Many folks who decide to go off grid are called Homestead Preppers.
Whatever type of prepper a person chooses to be they will need to store food, essentials, and prepper gear.
There are six primary steps to getting started in the PLSS life …
Step 1. Explore the various concepts and philosophies in the PLSS Life. Begin with life hacking. A life hack is any system or practical tip, shortcut, technique, method, tool, or tactic that can help a person get something done more effectively, efficiently, precisely, productively, accurately, and with greater self-awareness. In essence, a life hack helps an individual or group to fulfill their greatest potential at the lowest rational cost. A simple example of a shopping life hack is to find out when a store has a sale on something you need to buy and then learn what time of the week the checkout lines are shortest. In addition, if you show up near closing time, on a rainy day, at the end of the month you may be able to negotiate an even lower price. Pay in cash and the price may drop even further. (The end of the month hat is often when their bills come do.
Step 2. Learn about Applied Strategic Thinking: Consider that any skilled prepper or strategist must have both a short-term and long-term strategy such as whether to Bugin or Bugout in a SHTF scenario. A strategy is a complete plan of action for every stage of a scenario, including a complete process or set of rules to be followed in calculations or other problem-solving operations regardless of whether an actual challenge actually arises.
I like to frame the PLSS life as a type of game. As with any game, there are likely to be rules, other players, tools (equipment), a playing field or board (a game-space), ways of keeping score (how prepared are you?), and ways of knowing if you have won. One thing is for sure, the best players in any type of game are skilled strategists. The PLSS life is no different. There is an entire Ebook in this series on strategic thinking, Volume #6.
Step 3. Do it Yourself*: DIY* as the name implies, is the method of building, modifying, or repairing things by oneself (or with some support of knowledgeable peers without the direct aid of professionals or certified experts. DIY behaviors include using raw and semi-raw materials and parts to produce, transform, or reconstruct material things, including those drawn from the natural environment (e.g., landscaping). For a prepper, DIY behavior can be triggered by various motivations including economic benefits, lack of product availability, lack of product quality, need for customization, and identity enhancement (craftsmanship, empowerment, community seeking, uniqueness).
DIY is both a soft and hard prepperism method. It can be done without any thought of PLSS, but is an invaluable way of thinking for successful prepping.
Step 4. Intentional Living: Also known as Neo-Survivalism, intentional living usually involves a collaborative-communal spirit intelligently deployed through reciprocal altruism*. Here it is important to explore the supportive relationships you will require in SHTF* situation. Many preppers with an interest in Intentional Living join or create communities of like-minded people.
Step 5. Simple Living: Simple living refers to practices that promote simplicity, minimalism, and self-sufficiency in one's lifestyle. Common practices of simple living include general life hacks, DIY, reducing the number of possessions one owns, depending less on technology and services, and spending less money. These meaningful practices have existed throughout history, religion, art, and economics.
Step 6: Self-Assessment: It is important to engage in introspection and contemplation before deciding upon whether the PLSS lifestyle is something you really want to become skilled at. Maybe it is no more than a hobby for you or a general exploration of an idea.
The Takeaway
I believe, in these times, that prepping is important. I’m not recommending a particular approach that you need to pursue. In the PLSS world, if you know what your intentions are and your desired outcome it is easier to make wise choices. The PLSS movement offers a wide range of skills, philosophies, and communities. From the softest life hacker to the most hardened Bushcraft expert. What brings us all together is the knowledge that it is important to be self-sufficient if hard times come upon us.
