A 2 - Minute Read
A Poem about Soy Protein: (TVP)
Let’s talk about TVP,
A food made from soy protein and even a pea,
Though it is technically from a bean’s debris,
It’s as good as beef you won’t disagree.
Perfect for intentional living,
Sustainability and back to the earth living
So the taste of tofu is something you hate,
You won’t have this problem with this soy protein isolate
For a vegan prepper, soy foods are best,
And when it comes to storage TVP passes the test.
Soy foods, soy products, and soy meat is neat,
And when your in a cabin in winter they can’t be beat.
Soy meal? As a cook I am smitten,
There is just so much it is used for in my kitchen.
A calorie in soy milk is very low, oh boy
and there is great health to be found in isoflavone soy
Some say “soy bad for men”,
But I’ve been eating it since I don’t know when.
As far as I’m concerned soy milk healthy!
As a prepper it’s made me both wise and wealthy
And so I solute Textured Vegetable Protein
In my list of essential foods it beats a dead Holstein
One of my favorite prepper foods is Textured Vegetable Protein, also known as TVP. This is usually a soy-based meat substitute featured in many vegetarian products. You may also have noticed it on the shelves of supermarkets or health food stores.
Its unique texture and mild flavor make it a great addition to sauces, plant-based chili mixes, and veggie burgers. It’s also used to bulk up and add extra protein to meat-based dishes.
It is very lightweight and takes little space per pound. Most TVP-based products have a shelf life of 5-10 years longer than Freeze Dried meat. Honeyville's Freeze Dried Sausage, sealed in a #10 can, will give you a shelf life of 10-15 years, while Honeyville's Sausage Flavored TVP, also sealed in a #10 can, will stay fresh for 10-20 years if kept in a cool, dry place. If you put dry TVP in a mylar or ziplock bag with an oxygen quencher it should have a long shelf life.
Dry TVP flakes are an inexpensive protein source when purchased in bulk and can be added to a variety of vegetarian dishes or used as a meat extender or supplement to bulk out a meat dish.
Textured or texturized vegetable protein (TVP), also known as textured soy protein (TSP), soy meat, or soya chunks is a defatted soy flour product, a by-product of extracting soybean oil. It is often used as a meat analog or meat extender. It is great for preppers and off-grid survivalists because it is again lightweight, takes little space to store, has a long shelf-life, is quick to cook, and when served with any grain food, has a protein content comparable to or even greater than most meat, poultry, or fish.
TVP is commercially produced and may be produced from any protein-rich seed meal left over from vegetable oil production. Specifically, a wide range of pulse seeds besides soybean, including lentils, peas, and fava beans, may be used for TVP production. Peanut-based TVP is produced in China where peanut oil is a popular cooking oil.
How to use TVP
Use it where ever you would use ground beef…
· Casseroles dishes
· Chili
· Burgers (in mushroom-lentil burgers)
….and remember, life is not a dress rehearsal!——————————————————————————————————————
