The Diary Of A Healer #2
The Diary Of A Healer #2

For months now my life has been dominated not only by a diagnosis of Cancer but what had been a never-ending tortuous pain in my left leg. This extreme discomfort is between the top of my thigh and an inch or two inches above my knee.
The various specialists on my medical team prescribed different drugs and each worked in some way but not well enough to give me mental peace, and physical comfort.
I had done one hypnosis-relaxation training with my friend Dr. Scott Wiener. I got very busy and never did the second session he had offered. The hypnosis helped a bit in reducing my discomfort but my skills were not well-honed enough to use the technique properly.
Pain control has been a series of trial-and-error approaches. What worked one, day might not work the next.
Looking back just 24 hours, I realized I had not been communicating the level of my pain strongly enough to those willing to listen.
Two nights ago, the discomfort was so extreme, that I was ready to go to the emergency room at 2:00 am.
I began making desperate phone calls to the Palliative care department at the hospital and to the social worker. These were the two phone numbers I had where I could get a human being on the line. With any other place I called I got “Press #1 for this”, and “Press #2 for that” Circle Game. Then I called called Dr. Saleema. My family Physician. She made a few calls for me totally empathetic to my situation.
Suddenly everything concerning my pain management fell into place.
An oncologist specializing in pain management called me and mapped out a specific regime of medications. What to take, when to take it, and how to avoid the things that might cause me to overdose, etc. I listened carefully and took detailed notes. In the back of my mind, I could hear how serious this all was. “Overdose?”
The regime included a drug that had just been explored in a NY Times article. Five different people, who do not know each other had sent me that same article.
I put the regime in place and went to sleep at 11:30 pm surrendering all expectations. For the last three weeks, I have been getting no more than two to four hours of sleep a night.
I awoke this morning at 11:00 am
Last night was the first good night’s sleep I have had in two months.
All I could feel was gratitude.

It has been over 45 years and I am continually amazed when I look back upon how easily and quickly one step has led to the next. Thank you for being there to assist in laying the foundations for all my future studies.”
