Trending: The Mindfulness of Pope Francis
An example for us all. With related motivational quotes and a video
Pope Francis (born Jorge Mario Bergoglio;[c] 17 December 1936–21 April 2025) the head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State from 2013 until his death in 2025, passed away three weeks ago.
With the resignation of Pope Benedict XV,I Bergoglio was elected as his successor. He picked Francis as his papal name in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi, a great example to us all of humility and compassion.
Through his public and private life, Francis was noted for his:
humility,
emphasis on grace and God’s mercy,
international visibility as pope,
concern for the poor,
…and commitment to interreligious dialogue.
His approach to the papacy was less formal than that of his predecessors. For one, he chose to live in the Domus Sanctae Marthae guesthouse rather than in the papal apartments of the Apostolic Palace that previous popes had used.
He was also known for favoring simpler vestments free of ornamentation. In this frame of thinking, he:
Francis taught that the Catholic Church should demonstrate more inclusivity to LGBTQ people, and was a critic of:
trickle-down economics,
consumerism,
Most of all, Pope Francis was a mindful person. Many people have no understanding of the nature of mindfulness. Mindfulness is something unique, emptiness and fullness existing in the same place simultaneously. With mindfulness, you are fully satisfied. You are sensually full and with a satiated and enriched soul. When you are mindful, you have a better understanding of where you are in the world, how you got here, and where you are likely to end up. That’s what mindfulness can do for you.
It’s an energy, an intuitive sense, and a vibe. It’s an encapsulation not only of individual positivity but of a myriad of powerful and transformative qualities — Love, kindness, , empathy, wisdom, goodness, appreciation of beauty, grace, gratitude, forgiveness, compassion, mindfulness, patience, and surrender — always transformative. There’s no “boring” in mindfulness.
Pope Francis had this understanding. The forces that bring this state of mind into being, despite all the emotional trinkets driven by immaturity and an addiction to short-term gratification, are magical.
In mindfulness, there are no regrets or unnecessary expectations. On one level, a truly mindful moment will forevermore be recalled as the definitive memory and sensory experience you have of a particular place and moment in time, and on another level, it is just dust in the wind.
Whenever possible, it seems that Pope Francis sought to transcend rites, rituals, ceremonies, the clergy, or churches, temples, mosques or so-called Holy books. He was a Pope of love.
Understanding Mindfulness
Ultimately, mindfulness is a cognitive skill, often developed through meditation and contemplation, where an individual learns to sustain a meta-attentive awareness towards the patterns of one’s own mind in the present moment.
Mindfulness exists in all faiths but became an interest of spiritual seekers in the West from the concept of sati, a core element of Hindu and Buddhist traditions. It is also based on Chan, Guān, and Tibetan meditation techniques.
Important teachers and individuals who have contributed to the popularity of mindfulness in the modern Western context include
Thích Nhất Hạnh,
Joseph Goldstein,
Herbert Benson,
Jon Kabat-Zinn,
Ram Dass,
J. Krishnamurti,
…and Richard J. Davidson.

A Quote:
“Man is not an omnipotent master of the universe, allowed to do with impunity whatever he thinks, or whatever suits him at the moment. The world we live in is made of an immensely complex and mysterious tissue about which we know very little and which we must treat with utmost humility.”
— Vaclav Havel
